Just take the current interpretations of Shingle Style, a genre that originated in the 1880s and served as a transition between Queen Anne and Arts and Crafts.Today’s version, as commonly practiced in East Coast summer enclaves, has produced many lovely houses, but most are not, architecturally speaking, Shingle Style at all.In creating the beach retreat, Barkley, a partner at the New York– and San Francisco–based firm Ike Kligerman Barkley, paid authentic homage to the asymmetrical lines and inventive quirks that, in addition to those little squares of cedar, are Shingle Style’s hallmarks.

Every Summer I am overcome with fond memories of Long Island and the beach life style that it encompasses.Growing up within walking distance to the beach off the Long Island Sound, I soon realized that there was nothing quite like the Summer at the beach.Beach front homes with cedar shake shingles, the salt air, sandy dunes, ‘beach’ grasses blowing in the ocean breezes, and the somewhat rocky sand with tidal layers of dried seaweed along with an occasional horseshoe crab washed up with the tide.Life on Long Island….Whether you live by the beach or dream about the ocean air and the sandy shores, an interior can certainly be enhanced with neutral inspirations and natural nautical displays of the “beach house style”.

We loved designing this Hampton Style Cabana Pool House for our client on the North Shore of Long Island, NY.It was a fun interior decorating project and new gourmet kitchen installation.

We included fun photo wall art accents with clean crisp white seating and our favorite and cozy wicker chair.Little touches of clam shell lamps make it feel connected to the beaches in the area and are fun.There are many great decor pieces throughout the cabana and outside where we featured a large dining table for entertaining.

Iconic Pyramid House on Fire Island Lists For $6.5 Million

The legendary pyramid house on Fire Island is up for sale after changing hands back in 2018.Back then, Real Estate Agent Glenn Rice was visiting with a friend on Fire Island when he happened upon the home and fell in love.

Rice, of Brown Harris Stevens, is now selling the home, asking $6.5 million.The house is being sold fully furnished with the high end mid-century furnishings Rice purchased specifically for this property.

Also added were completely new mechanical systems and galvanized steel structural beams for an industrial level of structural stability rarely seen on Fire Island.
